JOB VACANCIES (No agencies, please)

We have an expanding order book and we have recently doubled our manufacturing area. We have vacancies for Mechanical Engineers / Fitters and an Electro-mechanical Service Engineer. Please see the Job Descriptions below.

At USL you have a unique opportunity to see the results of your efforts from the design stage through to installation and operation of testing machines, varying from laboratory scale units up to large, complex machines. We offer competitive salaries which are based on your abilities and experience.

We design and manufacture the complete system, including mechanical scanning units, electrical / electronic control, ultrasonic electronics and software. Our customers rely on us to ensure that whatever system they need, it will perform quickly, reliably and safely to the highest standards.

We deliver and install equipment throughout the world so you must be prepared to travel and be away from home occasionally. If you are interested please e-mail your CV to info@ultrasonic-sciences.co.uk stating which vacancy you are interested in.

JOB DESCRIPTION 1

MECHANICAL ENGINEER / FITTER

You will be responsible to the Chief Mechanical Engineer. The job is mainly concerned with the assembly and setting up of our mechanical scanning machines. These can be both large scale structures and also delicate electro-mechanisms. Typically they will comprise the following parts:

A welded / bolted structural assembly

Linear bearings / guideways

Rotational bearings of different types

Drive mechanisms with rack and pinion, ballscrew and belt drives

Drive shafts, linkages, gearboxes

DC servo and stepper motors, occasionally AC motors

Rotary and/or linear encoders

Buffers, limit switches, collision protection mechanisms

Water tanks, water circulation and treatment units

Preparation of surfaces and painting.

You will use the usual range of power tools in this work and there will be occasional need for small scale pedestal drill, lathe and milling work, although most of our machining is done by specialist sub-contractors.

You will usually work with GA, sub-assembly and detail part drawings, but detailed assembly instructions are not normally available because our machines are often unique. You will therefore need to work on your own initiative.

There will be occasional work in awkward positions and at heights of a few metres, so you need to be reasonably fit. You need to be aware of the safety implications of what you are doing and take the necessary precautions.

Many systems require on-site installation. Assistance with this will be one of the tasks. This will require travel in UK and overseas.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

A recognised Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship plus several years relevant practical experience. Demonstrable and relevant experience without an apprenticeship is acceptable, because practical experience is more important than formal qualifications.

You must be able to communicate effectively with colleagues in English. Experience in using CAD systems (preferably Autocad) at a basic level would be an advantage.

JOB DESCRIPTION 2

ELECTRO-MECHANICAL SERVICE ENGINEER

You will be responsible for servicing, troubleshooting, calibrating and repairing our machines on customer sites in the UK and overseas. When not required for these tasks you will assist in the assembly, testing and installation of new machines (as described in the Mechanical Engineer / Fitter job description above.)

You will assist in preparation or updating of Maintenance manuals and also specification and control of spare parts. Experience in assembling or servicing linear and rotary motion drive systems is essential and it would be advantageous (but not essential) to also have experience in one or more of the following areas:

DC servo and stepper motor drives and control

Control of machines by PC and PLC

PC software installation and maintenance

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

A recognised Electrical or Electro-Mechanical apprenticeship, plus several years relevant practical experience. Demonstrable and relevant experience without an apprenticeship is acceptable, because practical experience is more important than formal qualifications. This job might suit an instrument maker or mechanical engineering fitter who wishes to expand his/her horizons.

The job includes direct customer contact, which often requires tact and patience. You must be able to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers in English. Sometimes you will have to communicate with customers through an interpreter.

GENERAL

We will provide training in areas you are not familiar with. You must be willing to travel in UK and overseas. For the Service Engineer this travel will sometimes be at short notice.

The salary for both positions will be negotiable, based on your own capabilities and experience.

Normal working hours are Monday to Friday 9.00 to 5:30. Some overtime will be required (but is not guaranteed).

Holiday entitlement is 20 days plus Public holidays.

You should have a current driving licence without convictions.
