We have recently installed a robotic phased array system for inspection of composite parts at a major UK aerospace company. The system uses a dry coupled roller probe with a 64 element array coupled to USL's "Phasys" phased array electronics module. The roller probe is carried by an industrial robot and scans over the curved composite part in a trajectory created by the USL software from the customers CATIA based data. The combination of electronic scanning across the probe elements and mechanical scanning around the surface inspects the entire component in a few minutes.
All the "A scan" waveforms are stored during the inspection, allowing the operator to post process the data and view the details of the complex construction in order to evaluate and measure any suspect indications.
