Many of the systems shown on our other pages can be used or adapted for
general purpose applications in engineering research and manufacture. Because
USL designs and manufactures custom systems "in-house", we can produce
equipment which precisely meets your requirements. Two examples are shown here.
This
system was designed for rapid inspection of electron-beam welded gear components
in an automotive production cell. The components are partially immersed in a
coolant on a series of inspection spindles which are designed to suit different
gear assemblies. The spindles contain sensors which "tell" the
computer which component is loaded - this automatically sets up the ultrasonic
system with the correct parameters for that part, including the accept / reject
criteria. The component makes a single rotation and the test result is displayed
as a "Pass" or a "Fail" on the screen - the system operator
needs no experience or knowledge of ultrasonic testing. The routine inspection
takes less than 3 seconds. A separate inspection spindle is provided for a
"C scan" inspection covering the complete weld area - this is used for
a complete inspection when the welding machines are setup for a new part.
This
shows the turntable in a unit designed for inspection of bimetallic shell
bearings. It includes special fixturing to rapidly load and retain the two
halves of the shell bearing. Special software was produced to highlight defects
at the bondline and separate them from anomalous indications, such as blisters
on the surface.
