The SAM 350 is a general purpose scanning acoustic microscope designed for laboratory, research and educational purposes. It can also be used for small scale production ultrasonic testing of materials and assemblies. The standard unit has a three axis X-Y-Z scanning system, but additional optional axes can be provided, such as turntables, roller drives and rotating centres to suit specific components. The mechanical scanner is extremely accurate and robust - these units have been in use on a regular basis for over 10 years without any attention apart from occasional lubrication of the bearings.

It can be supplied with an ultrasonic system built up from the range of USL expansion boards for operation at frequencies up to 75MHz, with an analog-digital converter and digital signal processor (DSP) for real time data acquisition and C scan imaging. Full waveform acquisition and processing (Volume scan) is included as standard - in 1988 USL was one of the first companies in the world to offer this feature for high frequency imaging.

Ultrasonic frequencies up to 75MHz cover the vast majority of testing applications on industrial materials and components, but for the exceptional cases systems up to 400MHz can be supplied.
